⬤ Simple Past Tense (Geçmiş zaman) nedir?

Simple Past Tense geçmişteki olayları anlatmak için kullanılır. Geçmiş zaman olarak bilinir ve Türkçe’deki “-dı, -di, -du, -dü” şeklinde ifade edilir. Geçmişte bitmiş, tamamlanmış olayları ifade ederken kullanılır. Örneğin “geldi“, “oynadık”, “dinlediniz” fiillerinde olduğu gibi geşmiş bir olayı Simple Past Tense ile ifade ederiz.
Aşağıdaki değişken cümleler örnek birer İngilizce geçmiş zaman cümlesidir:

⬤ Nasıl öğrenelim?

İngilizce geçmiş zaman konusunu burada resimler, oyunlar, alıştırmalar, örnekler ve diyaloglar ile özel ders formatında öğrenebilirsiniz. Ama öncelikle aşağıda sade bir dil ile ve detaylıca anlatılan geçmiş zaman (simple past tense) konusunu güzelce öğrenin. Arkasından bu sayfanın aşağısında bulacağınız diğer oyunlar ve alıştırmaları yapmak zevkli ve kolay olacaktır.

⬤ Hangi yardımcı fiil kullanılır?

İngilizce geçmiş zamanda yardımcı fiil “did” dir. “Did” yardımcı fiili öznelere göre değişmez. Yani “He, She, It” için farklı bir şekli yoktur. “Did” yardımcı fiilinin son harfi kaldırılınca Türkçe’deki anlamı olan “-di” ortaya çıkıyor. “Did” yardımcı fiili olumsuz cümlelerde “did not” yada kısaca “didn’t” şeklinde kullanılır. Soru cümlelerinde ise “Did” cümle başına alınır. Bu arada “did” yardımcı fiili yanlış bir şekilde “İngilizce geçmiş zaman eki” olarak bilinir. Oysa Türkçe’deki gibi bir ek olmayıp aslında “yardımcı fiil”dir ve ekler gibi başka kelimeye eklenmez.

➔ Örnek cümleler:

  • He didn’t listen to music. (O müzik dinlemedi.)
  • Did he listen to music.? (O müzik dinledi mi?)
  • He listened to music. (O müzik dinledi.)

Son cümlede “did” kullanılmadığını farkettiniz. Oysa o da geçmiş zaman cümlesi. Ancak olumsuz ve soru cümlelerinde “did” kullanılsa da bu olumlu cümleler için geçerli değildir. Bu yüzden olumlu cümleler için fiilin ikinci hali (fiile -ed eklenmiş hali) kullanılır. Bu durumda “did” cümlede kullanılmaz. Çünkü artık cümlenin zamanını bize gösterecek başka bir şekil olan fiilin 2. hali (-ed eklenmiş hali) cümlede bulunmaktadır. Kısaca “did” sadece olumsuz ve sorularda kullanılır.

⬤ Olumlu cümleler geçmiş zamanda nasıl yapılır?

Olumlu bir geçmiş zaman (Simple Past Tense) cümlesinde fiilin 2. hali kullanılır. “Did” yardımcı fiili kullanılmaz. Fiilin 2. hali ise fiile -ed eklenerek yapılır. (Düzensiz fiiller daha aşağıda açıklanacaktır.)

  • I asked a question. (Bir soru sordum.)
  • She cleaned her room. (O odasını temizledi.)
  • Mehmet repaired the car. (Mehmet arabayı tamir etti.)
  • A traffic accident happened yesterday. (Dün bir trafik kazası oldu.)

⬤ Olumsuz cümleler geçmiş zamanda nasıl yapılır?

Geçmiş zaman (Simple Past Tense) bir cümleyi olumsuz yaparken “did” yardımcı fiili ile beraber “not” kullanırız. Kısaca “didn’t” olarak da kullanılır.

➔ Olumsuz yapı örnek cümleler:

  • He did not want tea. (O çay istemedi.)
  • We didn’t wait for the bus. (Otobüsü beklemedik.)
  • I didn’t use your pen. (Kalemini kullanmadım.)
  • Kemal didn’t lie. (Kemal yalan söylemedi.)

⬤ Soru cümleleri geçmiş zamanda nasıl yapılır?

Geçmiş zaman soru cümleleri “Did” yardımcı fiilinin özneden önce getirilmesi ile yapılır. Bu tür sorulara “Yes-No” soruları denir ve Türkçe’deki “-mı?, -mi?” şeklinde biten sorulardır. Cevaplar “Yes-No” ile başladığından bu ad verilir.
Wh- soruları dediğimiz bilgi sorularında da aynı şeklide yardımcı fiil özneden önce getirilir. Sadece cümlenin en başına “Who, What, Where, When” gibi soru kelimelerinden biri de getirilir.

  • Did you enjoy your holiday. (Tatilinden keyif aldın mı?)
  • Did she write an email. (Bir eposta yazdı mı?)
  • Where did you go? (Nereye girttin?)
  • What did Burak want? (Burak ne istedi?)

⬤ Düzensiz fiiller meselesi

İngilizce’de fiiller düzenli(regular) ve düzensiz (irregular) fiiller olarak ikiye ayrılır. Düzensiz fiillere geçmeden önce fiillerin hallerini tanıyalım.
İngilizcede fiillerin halleri vardır. Her hali farklı yerlerde kullanılarak cümlenin hangi zamanı yada durumu ifade edeceğini belirtir. Fiillerin 3 hali vardır. İşin güzel tarafı fiilleri 2. ve 3. hale getirmek için fiilin sonuna “-ed” ekini eklemek yeter. Bu fiillere düzenli fiiller (Regular Verbs) diyoruz.

⬤ Düzenli fiiller (regular verbs) nedir?

Adı üstünde düzenli fiiller bir kural dahilinde 2. ve 3. hallere dönüştürülen fiillerdir. Bu kural fiilin sonuna “-ed” eklemektir.

⬤ Düzensiz fiiller (irregular verbs) nedir?

Fiilleri 2. ve 3. hale getirirken yaptığımız “-ed” ekleme kuralına uymayan ve farklı haller takınan fiillere düzensiz fiiller (irregular verbs) diyoruz. Bunların 2. ve 3. halleri değişiklik gösterir. İşte bu düzensiz fiilleri ve onların 2. ve 3. hallerini ezberlememiz gerekecektir. İngilizce’nin ezber gereken en önemli ve kritik yerlerinden biri burasıdır.

⬤ 1- Geçmişte tamamlanmış eylemler

Simple Past Tense geçmişte belirli bir zamanda başlamış ve bitmiş eylemler için kullanılır.

➔ Örnek cümleler:

  • I watched a film yesterday. (Dün bir film seyrettim.)
  • I didn’t watch a film yesterday. (Dün bir film seyretmedim.)
  • Last year, I traveled to Italy. (Geçen yıl İtalya’ya seyahat ettim.)
  • Last year, I didn’t travel to Italy. (Geçen yıl İtalya’ya seyahat etmedim.)
  • She washed her hands. (Ellerini yıkadı.)
  • She didn’t wash her hands. (Ellerini yıkamadı.)
  • I bought a hat yesterday. (Dün bir şapka satın aldım.)
  • Did you like your cake? (Kekini beğendin mi?)
  • Where did you go? (Nereye gittin?)
  • What did Kerem say? (Kerem ne dedi?)
  • How did she get 100 points in the exam? (O sınavdan nasıl 100 puan aldı?)

⬤ 2- Geçmişte tamamlanmış eylemler serisi

Simple Past Tense’i geçmişte tamamlanmış birkaç eylemi arka arkaya anlatmak için kullanırız.

➔ Örnek cümleler:

I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim. (İşlerimi bitirdim, sahile yürüdüm ve yüzmek için güzel bir yer buldum.)

He arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at 9:00, and met the others at 10:00. (Havaalanından saat 8’de geldi, 9’da otele kaydını yaptırdı ve diğerleriyle 10’da buluştu.)

⬤ 3- Geçmişteki alışkanlıklar

Simple Past Tense aynı zamanda geçmişteki alışkanlıklar için de kullanılır. Bahsettiğimiz eylemin bir alışkanlık olduğunu açıkça belirtmek için cümlelerde “always” (daima), “often” (sık sık), “usually” (genellikle) ve “never” (asla) gibi zaman ifadeleri kullanılır. Bu cümleler tekrar veya alışkanlık belirttiğinden Türkçe’de daha anlamlı olması için “yapardı”, “oynardı” şeklinde de söyleyebiliriz.

➔ Örnek cümleler:

  • I always played basketball when I was a child. (Çocukken herzaman basketbol oynardım/oynadım.)
  • He often played the guitar. (Sıksık gitar çalardı/çaldı.)
  • They never went to school, they always skipped.(Hiç okula gitmezlerdi, hep kaçarlardı.)
  • She worked at the hospital after school. (Okuldan sonra hastanede çalışırdı/çalıştı.)

✎ NOT:
Son cümlede “always”, “often” gibi yapılan eylemin tekrarını belirten bir sıklık zarfı olmasa da eylemin tekrarlandığını cümleden anlayabiliriz.

⬤ “was”, “were” ile geçmiş zaman kullanımı nasıldır?

Çoğu kişinin aklına geçmiş zaman deyince “was” ile “were” gelir. Aslında bu doğrudur ama eksik bilgidir. Şöyle ki: Bildiğimiz gibi Türkçe’de isim cümleleri ve fiil cümleleri vardır. İçinde fiil (eylem) olan cümleye fiil cümlesi denir. İçinde fiil olmayan cümlelere de isim cümleleri denir. Buna göre içinde fiil olan cümleleri yukarıda detaylı anlatıldığı gibi “did” yada fiilin 2. hali ile ifade ederiz. İçinde fiil olmayan cümleleri ise “was”, “were” ile ifade ederiz.

➔ Örnek cümleler:

  • ⬤ I lived in Bursa. (Ben Bursa’da yaşadım) – Fiil cümlesidir. Yaşamak (live) fiili kullanılmıştır.
  • ⬤ I was in Bursa. (Ben Bursa’daydım.) – İsim cümlesidir. Bu cümle içinde hareket, eylem belirten bir fiil yoktur. Dolayısıyla “was” ve “were” kullanıldı. Bu durum “to be fiili” olarak adlandırılır.

  • Salih worked at the hospital. (Salih hastanede çalıştı.)
  • Salih didn’t work at the hospital. (Salih hastanede çalışmadı.)
  • Did Salih work at the hospital? (Salih hastanede çalıştı mı?)
  • Where did Salih work? (Salih nerede çalıştı?)

➔ İsim cümlesi örnekleri (was-were)

  • Salih was at the hospital. (Salih hastanedeydi.)
  • Salih wasn’t at the hospital. (Salih hastanede değildi.)
  • Was Salih at the hospital? (Salih hastanede miydi?)
  • Where was Salih? (Salih neredeydi?)

⬤ Bazı geçmiş zaman yapıları

“Var” anlamına gelen “There is / There are” yapısı geçmiş zamanda “There was/ There were” şeklinde kullanılır.

  • There were a lot of birds on the tree. (Ağaçta birçok kuş vardı.)
  • Was there an earthquake yesterday? (Din bir deprem var mıydı?)
  • What was there in the box? (Kutuda ne vardı?)

Ayrıca zorunluluk belirten “must” ile “have to” yapılarının geçmiş hali “had to” dur ve geçmişteki zorunluluğu belirtir. Anlamı “yapmalıydı”, “zorunda kaldı” şeklindedir.

➔ Örnek cümleler:

  • She had to take her pills. (Haplarını almalıydı/ Almak zorunda kaldı.)
  • I had to stop. (Durmak zorunda kaldım.)
  • Did you have to get up early? (Erken kalkmalı mıydın? / Erken kalkmak zorundamıydın?)

⬤ Zaman zarfları olarak geçmiş zamanda ne kullanılır?

Time expressions (zaman zarfları) zaman belirten ifadelerdir ve İngilizce’de her zaman (tense) için farklı zaman zarfı kullanılır. Özellikle sınavlarda cümlenin hangi zaman olduğunu anlamak için bunların bilinmesi çok önemlidir. Geçmiş zamandaki zaman ifadeleri şunlardır:
